A new poll commissioned recently shows that Americans are evenly split when it comes to the issue of legalizing and regulating US sports betting across the nation. The Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind poll found that US voters were split exactly 42 to 42% that citizens should be allowed to wager on professional sports, as well as sports at college level.

More interestingly, however, is the fact that this is a vast improvement from last year’s poll, where it was shown that over half those polled were opposed to the idea of legal sports betting. The March 2010 poll showed that 53% opposed sports betting, while 39% were in favor. This reflects the growing trend to see sports betting legalized at a federal level and in all states among US citizens.

The poll comes at a time when New Jersey is moving closer than ever to legalizing its sports betting industry. The state could see an approved sports betting law by January 2012, with the next objective being to head to the federal courts to try and overturn a ban. Voters indicated in a state referendum last month that they were in favor (at a 2:1 ratio) of legalized sports betting.

“Gambling has become, for good or ill, a national industry, and you can bet that politicians and casinos all over the country are closely following New Jersey’s plans,” said the director of the poll, Peter Woolley.

A journalist who now runs a gambling site said: “There is enormous pent-up demand for sports wagering. We write about it because even though we can’t do it on our region, it is part of the water-cooler conversation. Every time someone talks about what Atlantic City needs to save it, the talk turns to sports betting.

Playground Poker Club has upped the ante, adding Guy Carbonneau to their Players Club roster.

The Playground Poker Club claims they are “for players, by players,” part of their attempt to become known as Canada’s top poker destination. Their new Players Club is a group of famous names in sports and poker gambling. Guy Carbonneau is the first hockey star to join the Club, though Playground hints that he won’t be the last.

Playground is a short trip from downtown Montreal in Kahnawake, a gambling jurisdiction famous for licensing online poker sites all over the world. Playground has 25 poker tables, a five star restaurant, and 24 hour a day poker action. The Players Club is an elite group of poker players, sports stars, and celebs. The addition of three-time Stanley Cup winner Guy Carbonneau is the latest in a string of announcements about new Club members.

Carbonneau was the captian of the Montreal squad that won the NHL’s Stanley Cup in 1993. Club leaders highlight Carbonneau’s leadership, celebrity profile, and love of poker in naming him to the Playground Players Club.

Carbonneau became eligible for entry into the Club after participating in a charity tournament featuring hockey veterans as well as current hockey players playing poker alongside professional poker players Antonio Esfandiari, Trishelle Cannatella, and others.

Kahnawake is a natural fit for Carbonneau and other hockey legends, since the Montreal Canadiens are considered the NHL’s greatest and most storied team, and the entire Montreal area is experiencing a boom in poker play and other gaming venues.

Other members of the Players Club include poker stars Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Laak, Michael “Grinder” Mizrachi, Greg “FBT” Mueller, and dozens of others. The Players Club represents the best of the best at Playground Poker Club, fast becoming the number one spot for Canadian poker.

The Governor of Illinois, Pat Quinn is still sending out confusing messages regarding his stand on gambling. The governor showed his support for gambling causes by encouraging the purchase of scratch off tickets for the Veterans Cash lottery game, however, the next day, he warned that he may veto legislation that would expand gambling activity in the state unless a ‘framework’, created by him, was followed by lawmakers.

Reforms to Illinois’ gambling industry have been in limbo since the summer months as Quinn stands his ground on the issue of slots at race tracks. While the bill makes provision for slot machines, Quinn’s outline doesn’t.

“My interest is not to promote gambling,” said the governor, one day after pitching for the lottery game. “I don’t think you can gamble your way to prosperity. It is an issue. I’m open minded to dealing with it along the framework that I outlined, but my fundamental focus is getting our economy on track.”

Quinn has threatened to veto the original expansion bill put forth by lawmakers, which would make provisions for five new casinos in the state, as well as slot machines at race tracks, airports and state fairgrounds.

“They can send me the bill they passed on May 31,” said Quinn. “I’ll be happy to veto out all the bad things in that bill, and there are many defects in it, and then I will put in the appropriate integrity safeguards and scale back the gambling casinos, and we can go forward.

Mississippi is slowly dropping on the scale of the most profitable casino states in the US, and now finds itself number five on the ladder – behind New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Nevada.

There are a number of factors that have affected the Magnolia State’s dream of pushing past New Jersey to become number two on the scale. For starters, this year saw some of the worst floodings in the past 100 years in Mississippi, forcing a number of casinos to close their doors, albeit temporarily, until the river water receded.

However, the figures that impacted the state’s standing on the scale more than anything were those that reflected gambling earnings in August. Without any warning, state licensed casinos showed a 9% drop in earnings compared to August 2010.

In August 2011, the nineteen casinos along the Mississippi River took in $94 million from players. This was down $6.5 million compared to the same period last year. The Gulf Coast casinos didn’t fare much better, with a drop from $101 million to $90.9 million at the eleven casinos in the region.

The Executive Director of the Mississippi Gaming Commission, Allen Godfrey had no explanation for the drop. “I have no insight,” he admitted. “I would hate to speculate.”

Looking at the other states on the scale, Godfrey did speculate that Pennsylvania is probably going to continue to grow. “It is a fairly new market,” he said. “We’ve been a fairly consistent market and there is room to grow.”

Gambling taxes represent around 3% of revenue collections in Mississippi – enough to make lawmakers worried as they sit down to write the state budget.

The Alderney Gambling Commission announced on Thursday that it would be revoking Full Tilt Poker’s gambling license, after the commission concluded that the beleaguered online poker room had misled them about its funds. As such, Full Tilt Poker was found to be in serious breach of the commission’s regulations, including the failure to report material events and the unauthorized provision of credit.

The industry had been waiting for the results of a closed door meeting held between the Alderney officials and representatives of Full Tilt Poker, especially since on the same day that the meeting took place, the US Department of Justice issued allegations against the company and its executives, accusing them of running a Ponzi scheme and defrauding players of $444 million.

“At a hearing held in London over six days, it emerged that FTP had fundamentally misled AGCC about their operational integrity by continuously reporting as liquid fund balances that had been covertly seized or restrained by US authorities, or that were otherwise not actually available to the operator,” said the Commission in a statement. “Serious breaches of AGCC regulations include false reporting, unauthorized provision of credit, and failure to report material events.”

Full Tilt Poker responded to this latest AGCC statement with a statement of its own posted on pokerstrategy.com that Alderney’s decision “makes it more difficult to execute the sale of the company and hence replay its players.” The group, however, said that it “remains committed to repaying its players in full and continues in active negotiations.”

Also on Thursday, the Department of Justice issued a statement saying that it was still attempting to collect money from Full Tilt Poker but it could not give its guarantee that all players would be paid out. “We cannot predict the duration of proceedings in this case, other than to state they will last for many months at the least,” said the Justice Department.

What possesses a guy to walk out on his wife and three young kids, pull a disappearing act and ‘play dead’ for over 30 years?

What possesses a guy to walk out on his wife and three young kids, pull a disappearing act and ‘play dead’ for over 30 years? When Arthur Gerald Jones turned up in Las Vegas, working as a bookie under a false name this week, the police were astounded to find that he had actually been declared officially dead, after his mysterious disappearance in the spring of 1979.

Digging deeper, the police found the tale of a man desperate to get away from the mob after landing himself in gambling debts which snowballed out of proportion. When Jones’ best friend, who also allegedly owed money to the mob, was murdered in his home, the bookie felt that he was next on the list. Enlisting the help of a friend, Jones paid $800 for false identity papers and then one day, he simply left home, said he was going to run an errand, and was never heard from again.

Although the FBI suspected a mafia connection to his disappearance, Jones was never found, and in 1986, an Illinois court declared him officially dead, allowing his wife to claim $47,000 in social security benefits for herself and their children.

After his disappearance, Jones travelled through California and Florida, before landing up in Vegas where he went back to work as a bookie. According to the 72 year old, he wanted to “make a fresh start” and never spoke to his family and friends about his disappearance – allowing them all to believe that he was dead. For the past decade, he has been using the name Joseph Richard Sandelli in Vegas.

Although he faces four felony counts, Jones may be able to reach a plea deal with the Nevada AG which will allow him to plead guilty to just one charge, and face probation.

A hearing has been set for next month.

Diamond Sportsbook Gets Shut Down.

On May 23, 2011, 2Betsdi.com, an online sportsbook which operated Diamond Sportsbook, gets shutdown with its domain name seized by the FBI Government for running an illegal gambling business and money laundering. Several other sportsbooks are changing their domain to .ag or .eu, so the US government can’t seize their domain or .com for example. Bodog has already adjusted to Bodog.eu and Bookmaker.com, which is on the list below, has changed to bmaker.ag.

Betting Sites Still Accepting USA Players

Bodog.com

BetOnline.com

Payment processors seem to always be a main issue in these cases, where funds are funneled through the US in undesirable fashion, which cause money laundering issues as an example. I would imagine all of the sportsbooks will continue to operate, especially with their offshore accounts in which they are licensed and have no issues with payment processing. The issue seems to be that these sportsbooks are located in another legal gambling country, but the payment processing systems in place are walking a fine line in who and where they are excepting and distributing payment.

Other betting sites that were shut down with Diamond Sportsbook were; BetEd.com, Funtimebingo.com, Goldenarchcasino.com, Truepoker.com, Betmaker.com, Betgrandesports.com, Doylesroom.com, Betehorse.com, Bookmaker.com.

This seems to be another scare tactic by government officials in light of the Black Friday where PokerStars, FullTilt, etc. had their domain name seized. The indictments and seizures were announced by United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein. ThrillX, a software company producing online sportsbook and casino software in British Columbia, Canada, and BMX Entertainment which operates six sports betting sites, are two of the players involved in the seizure warrants.

As new information comes about, we will try updating everyone as we learn more. In the meantime, there are still several reputable gambling sites and sportsbooks accepting players from the USA.

Funtimebingo.com
Goldenarchcasino.com
Truepoker.com
Betmaker.com
Betgrandesports.com
Doylesroom.com
Betehorse.com
Bookmaker.com.

If you are wondering what betting sites still accept US players, we recommend the following two:
