Fan Lies About MLB Star Stanton Injuring His Hand

Jordan Jacobson, who was a spectator at the 2014 MLB Home Run Derby at Target Field last week, posted a photo on Twitter after the event, showing a hand battered black and blue.  Jacobson claimed that his injury was the result of him trying to catch a ball hit by Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton.   The player’s power is well known and many fans have experienced the force of balls hit by Stanton as he goes for a home run.  It turns out, however, that the “injury” was actually a birth defect on Jacobson’s hand.

After the so-called incident, Jacobson said in an interview to Page Q Sports: “It was extremely painful at first, then went numb after about 15 minutes. It probably would have felt better if I would have gotten the ball.”

Stanton seemed to have got wind of the incident and decided to be kind to his “injured” fan by sending him a few souvenirs. “Sorry you had to “Bear” this pain @Jacobs0n13! But look on the bright side, now u get my Glove & a Derby ball!” he tweeted back as an apology.

The public lie and Stanton’s heartfelt apology seemed to be too much for Jacobson’s conscience to bear, however, and he soon decided to come clean, again publishing a tweet, but this time in the form of his own apology.

“I want to sincerely apologize to Giancarlo and the Miami Marlin community,” he said. “My ill attempt to make fun of my own birth defect by suggesting it was the result of an attempt to catch a baseball clearly was not wise. What started as a funny joke between friends quickly got away from me. For that I am disappointed and embarrassed. Please accept my apologies.”

One wonders whether he’ll return the mitt and Derby ball sent to him by Stanton…
