MLB Player David Wright Comforts Sons of Slain NYPD Officer Ramos

David Wright, who plays for the New York Mets baseball team, showed his soft side recently when he contacted the two young sons of slain NYPD officer Rafael Ramos.  Wright’s own father is a police officer and he has often spoken fondly of his “hero”.  As such, he felt that he could provide some comfort to Jaden and Justin Ramos, whose father was killed in the line of duty last month in Brooklyn.

According to media reports, Wright had a 15 minute conversation with the boys and invited them to hang out with the Mets in Florida. The New York Daily reported that “the boys will even get the chance to join Wright and the other Mets players in the dugout for Grapefruit League games in Florida.”

A police source, who was present during the conversation told the NY Daily: “You should have seen them — what a reaction. They were really smiling. It gave them a few minutes to smile and be excited. They are really looking forward to meeting him and spending time with the team.”

Rafael Ramos and his co-officer, Wenjian Liu, were gunned down by a lone assailant as they sat in their patrol car.  The murderer later ended his own life.

David Wright has always been an outspoken supporter of the police force, and the NYPD in particular.  He was quoted saying about his own father: “He raised four kids on a cop’s salary but never told us the details of his job, about crashing down doors of drug houses and arresting bad guys with guns. If he had, I probably would have had a lot of sleepless nights.”

Jaden and Justis Ramos have been embraced by major league sports teams.  Last month, the New York Yankees also annoounced that they would cover the boys’ education.
