New Airtight Security Measures at Yankee Stadium

As baseball season kicks off, the MLB announced that it intends to introduce standardized security measures to all 30 parks across the nation in time for the 2015 timetable.  Baseball fans will get the first taste of toughened measures – as well as the side-effects such as longer lines – when they visit Yankee Stadium on August 19th as part of the Yankees’ upcoming homestand.

The Major Baseball League already implements certain security measures such as bag checking at entrances, but has been working with the Department of Homeland to ensure even tighter security. As such, all parks will feature metal detectors, similar to those found at airports from next year.  The MLB said that some parks, such as Yankee Stadium, will have these detectors in place before 2015 so that visitors and staff can get used to the new measures.

Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost said about the new security plans: “Nothing is more important to us at Yankee Stadium than the safety of the fans we serve. To that end, we are committed to the procedures that Major League Baseball and the Department of Homeland Security have asked us to implement. We want our fans to feel safe in Yankee Stadium, and our staff is dedicated to maintaining the highest security standards possible.”

Extra time will also need to be budgeted in, as visitors can expect longer lines.

Some of the security measures include:

  • A ban on bags larger than what is deemed MLB-acceptable (16 inch x 16 inch x 8 inch).
  • The removal of cellphones and other metal objects before walking through metal detectors.
  • All bags will be checked.
  • The choice of being manually checked if baseball fans prefer not to walk through a metal detector.
