NCAA Winston Apologizes for Crab Legs Theft

Jameis Winston, the NCAA Florida State quarterback, who was filmed walking out a Publix grocery store with crabs legs without paying for them, has apologized for his actions and continues to insist that he simply forgot to head to the tills. The silent video from the store’s surveillance camera, shows a casually dressed Winston walking to the back of the store and picking up $32 worth of crabs legs and a pack of butter.  He then heads to the exit of the store and is seen pausing as a law enforcement official walks past him.

“Mr. Winston paused visibly near a series of sale bins and allowed Deputy Graves to pass in front of him,” reads the report written by store security. “The pause appeared to be an attempt to avoid walking in front of Deputy Graves. Mr. Winston then walked behind Deputy Graves, passed all points of sale, and exited the store without paying for the merchandise.”

After being confronted by police regarding the alleged theft, Winston admitted that he had taken the groceries but had simply forgotten to pay for them.  “I went to the supermarket with the intent to purchase dinner but made a terrible mistake for which I’m taking full responsibility,” he said in a statement.

Winston was sentenced to 20 hours of community service and has been suspended from three FSU games until he has completed his punishment.

The youngest ever Heisman Trophy winner went on to say: “In a moment of youthful ignorance, I walked out of the store without paying for one of my items. I realize that I am in the public spotlight and my conduct needs to be above reproach.”

In November last year, Winston was accused of sexual harassment in a case that was eventually closed by the Tallahassee Police Department and the player was never charged.  Last month, the New York Times reported irregularities in the case, claiming that the Tallahassee police had never even interviewed Winston, nor had they received a DNA sample from him.
