Uruguayan President Lets Loose on FIFA Over Suarez Ban

The President of Uruguay, Jose Mujica, has let all his frustrations out on the global soccer authority, FIFA after World Cup team player, Luis Suarez was suspended from all matters relating to the game for four months.  FIFA issued an unprecedented ban on Suarez who attempted to take a chunk out of Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder during the World Cup match between Uruguay and Italy.

Mujica, a popular political figure, was videotaped saying “FIFA are just a bunch of old sons of bitches”.  The president then places his hand in front of his mouth in mock-horror as if caught out saying something that shouldn’t be heard. The journalist filming the 79 year old is heard asking the President if the video can be aired, to which he replies, “Yes, publish!”

Mujica is also heard saying about FIFA: “They could have punished [Suarez], but not given him this fascist ban.”

Suarez, who has twice before been punished for biting a fellow soccer player, was suspended from anything related to the game for 16 weeks.  This meant that the star player missed his team’s crucial World Cup match against Columbia on Saturday, and which many say led to Uruguay’s exit from the international tournament.

The ban is considered particularly harsh because Suarez is not allowed to even train with his home team or Liverpool for whom he plays out of World Cup season, nor is he even allowed to enter a soccer stadium during that time.

“Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field,” said FIFA in a statement.

“The Disciplinary Committee took into account all the factors of the case and the degree of Mr Suarez’s guilt in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Code. The decision comes into force as soon it is communicated.”
